Fees and  Rebates

Health Triangle is a psychological service and is a privately billing practice. Clients are required to pay the full fee (unless their fees are subsidised by an organisation). If they have a referral letter and a Mental Health Care Plan, they will be able to obtain the rebate from the Medicare.

Medicare Rebate

To be eligible to receive psychological services under Medicare, clients must be referred by their GP with a Referral Letter and a Mental Health Care Plan. They will be able to receive a rebate from Medicare if they have a Mental Health Care Plan from their GP and their Medicare card is valid. The referral letter and Mental Health Care Plan must have been completed by their GP and lodged to Medicare prior to the client’s session for them to be able to claim a Medicare rebate.

Medicare rebate is available for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. Currently GPs could refer for 6 initial sessions, then another 4 sessions. After utilising these 10 sessions in a Calendar year, GPs could refer for another extra 10 sessions under COVID-19 items. The COVI-19 items are currently approved until the end of 2022.

Private Health Fund

Clients can use their private health insurance to obtain rebate for their sessions depending on their level of cover. A referral letter would be enough if a person would like to utilise their private health fund. They do not need to have a mental health care plan. Clients require to contact their private health fund to obtain that information prior to booking their session because the rebate varies from fund to fund depending on their level of cover. One cannot obtain rebate from both Medicare and their Private Health Fund.

Workcover, TAC, NDIS, Victims of Crime (VOCAT), DHHS, Anglicare

We accept referrals for client under the care of these agencies. However, clients are required to have approval for psychology services from relevant agency prior to their session. If they attend their session with prior approval, we will bill the appropriate agency and they do not have to pay for their session. However, if the agency refuses to pay for their session, the client is liable for the payment of that session.

Please be mindful that having an approved claim does not necessary mean that you are approved for psychology services. To avoid incurring the cost, it is best to obtain a written approval from the relevant agency for psychology services before attending your first session.

Referral Process
A referral letter is required for all categories of referrals. For referrals through Medicare, a MHCP also needs to be completed by the GP and could be sent to us alongside the referral letter.

Please be mindful that Medicare has specific requirement for referrals made through Medicare Better Access to Psychologists initiative.

There is no single template for referrals; however, referrals should include the following information:

  • Client’s name
  • Client’s date of birth
  • Client’s address
  • Diagnosis
  • List of any current medications
  • Signed and dated by the referring practitioner
  • Consent signed and dated by the client

A MHCP may be provided to us with the referral. Medicare requirement is that a referral letter must be sent to us, and it is valid until the referred number of sessions have been completed. If the GP chooses not to provide us with a copy of the MHCP, it would be helpful to note in the referral letter that a MHCP has been completed for the client.

Every client is eligible for a MHCP once a year, and a MHCP Review every 3 months.

Please be mindful that unless the MHCP is dated, signed and billed to the Medicare, it is not valid. This would compromise the client’s ability to obtain rebate from Medicare.

For complete information regarding Medicare requirements for Better Access to Psychologists initiative please refer to: https://www1.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/Content/mental-ba

Referrals could be emailed or fax to us. Upon receiving the referral, our practice contacts the client on the phone number provided on the referral letter and would offer them an appointment. Alternatively, clients could be given the referral documents and ask to contact us directly on the phone number or email address provided in the practice contact details. We endeavour to make the waiting time as minimum as possible, however, if you believe that a client requires urgent appointment, please note that in their referral letter.
